Have you ever read a book that has inspired you? Has changed you? Or where you learned something wonderfully new? Or how about a book that left you fascinated or amazed? A story you read that has stayed on your mind for days or weeks?
We all appreciate and remember the books that have had a positive impact on us. I love to read and I’m always looking for memorable books. And maybe you are too. So, I thought it would be fun to start a “bookshelf” and suggest some of the books I’ve liked that you might enjoy too. And I’m hoping you’ll share your recommendations in return.
While it’s great for us to read to our children and build a home library for them, if we want our children to love reading it’s crucial for us to model that behavior. And if you enjoy reading this can be another reason for you to build time into your day to do that.
I used to read mainly fiction books but ever since we started a family I have moved from reading mostly fiction books to mostly non-fiction books. I guess it’s because I feel the pressure of time and I figure if I am going to take time away from other things (like laundry & cleaning – you know, the things I love, umm not really) in order to read then I should make the most of it and learn something. There are so many inspirational stories and awesome things to learn through books that I have had no trouble finding good non-fiction books to read.
One such book that I just finished is When God Intervenes by Dabney Hedegard. I read the entire book in the span of a day. That never happens. At least not anymore. But I made time for this one because, well, I just couldn’t put it down. I was on the edge of my seat through the whole book.
And when I finished, all I could say to myself was WOW. Double-WOW. I cannot believe all that this woman had to endure. It’s incomprehensible to me. Dabney found out she had Hodgkin’s disease when she was 6 weeks pregnant and for years battled cancer along with other medical problems. Major medical problems. She nearly died four times.
I’ll admit that I got teary several times while reading this and I felt a little sick during certain parts. What she went through is pretty horrendous. But she survived and has an awesome story to tell.
Dabney’s strong Christian faith is woven through the entire book and her testimony to the power of prayer is amazing. The subtitle to the book is “An Extraordinary Story of Faith, Hope, and the Power of Prayer” and I couldn’t agree more.

Do you have any book recommendations? I’d love to hear!
